SOTD: "Meet the Frownies"

Song Of The Day is “Meet the Frownies” by Mr Twin Sister. This is a special song because it is not only great on its own but it was also sampled in one of Kendrick Lamar’s most popular songs “The Recipe” ft. Dr. Dre, a bonus track on his legendary deluxe album, good kid, m.A.A.d city. When the song dropped, people often wondered, “why sample an obscure indie rock group like Twin Sister?” According to a Life & Times interview with the producer for “The Recipe”, Scoop Deville, he was on the way to the airport when “Meet the Frownies” was premiered on an indie radio station in LA. “As soon as that record kicked in, it already had me captivated,” Deville said. “Then that voice came on–‘Smokin’ weeed with youuuu…’ It just did something to me where I had a ‘hip-hop producer moment’.” Deville went on to explain that “Musically and production-wise, it was incredible that it could bring something new and fresh to hip-hop.
